Government remains committed to uplifting the lives people of Marikana and Wonderkop

Wonderkop – North West Premier, Prof Tebogo Job Mokgoro has reaffirmed the provincial government’s position of being committed to changing the lives of Wonderkop and Marikana people through service delivery programmes and other means of support.

Premier Mokgoro was addressing the Marikana Peace Prayer Day over the weekend at Wonderkop Sports Ground, as part of the North West Provincial Government’s efforts to bring about interventions which are aimed at reviving Wonderkop and Marikana areas through developments and restoring peace and stability that existed before.

Premier Mokgoro, who started the day by officially opening the 1st Annual Wonderkop Soccer Tournament, reassured residents that all promises made will be delivered.

“Serving you remains our number one priority. There are programmes in place that are intended to bring about change in this area. Different government departments will continue to identify and unblock all service delivery challenges working together with the Rapid Response Task Team established to speed up service delivery in the province” said Premier Mokgoro.

A R1,8 million cheque was presented to Bonolo Soup Kitchen which was funded by the provincial department of Social Development. The establishment is owned by Evelyn Mmekwa, a woman who supplied soup to the striking Lonmin mine workers before the 2012 Marikana incident.

“As government we’re proud of the Bonolo Soup Kitchen and we encourage others to come up with initiatives that will be supported by government, so that their lives can change for the better’’, remarked Premier Mokgoro.

Uniforms, toiletries and sanitary pads were also handed over to the disadvantaged children in the area by department Social Development.

Expressing her gratitude for the funding provided by the provincial government, Ms Mmekwa said, “I prayed for this day for ages and finally government has delivered. Government cannot serve all of us at once but if we exercise patience as the community, services will reach us. I am overjoyed that I will now have a place to grow my catering business. I can’t thank the government enough” said Mmekwa.

During the prayer service, Pastors who prayed against all forms of social ills to break new grounds towards peace and stability in the area, also included the upcoming provincial and national elections in the prayers.
