Date: Friday, January 28, 2022

The department of Public Works and Roads has launched for immediate implementation strategic road projects with the combined contract value of more than R430 million for Ngaka Modiri Molema District alone in the current financial year.

These road projects form part of the 14, which the department undertook to implement in municipalities in the four districts of the province before the end of the current financial year, as part the Provincial 10-year Road Master Plan.

The good news for the Ngaka Modiri Molema District is three o of the road projects awarded -for which sods were turned and contractors appointed and introduced to stakeholder- are upgrades, from gravel to tar and special maintenance.

This past Tuesday, saw the department turning the sod and introducing on site, the appointed contractor-Afri Road Surfacing (Pty) Ltd- for the special maintenance on the 28 km stretch from Setlagole to Delareyville (Road P34/4).

The contract amount for the 15-month project is R150.4 million which will go towards the rehabilitation and resurfacing to the existing and deformed surfaced road .

This is road that connects Delareyville town with Madibogo Setlagole village and Geysdorp.

Works is also expected to start soonest for the next 18 months for the upgrade from gravel to tar of the 15km road from the intersection of Chief Albert Luthuli road, through Lokaleng and Mogosane villages ending up in Tlapeng. (Road Z422).

Lichenry Construction (Pty) Ltd has been appointed and introduced to stakeholders this past Sunday to undertake the project for contract amount of R103.9million.

The appointment of a new contractor by the department, was necessitated following the termination of the previous contractor appointed in January 2020t, WTW Civil (Pty) Ltd, due to poor performance.

Originally the project- which was 8km them, was to completed by November 2021.

That company also applied for liquidation in the process but for work already done at the point of termination, cost the department R16million.

The next 13-months should also witness construction works on the road from Madibogo going though Madibogopan ending at the intersection between Stella and Delareyville (Road Z482 to D1727).

This road is strategic to the district in that it remains an important link between Madibogo, Madibogopan and the local urban centres of Mahikeng and Vryburg. It is also an important commuter route for taxis and busses traveling locally and beyond to Mahikeng and Vryburg.

Taupele Construction (Pty) Ltd have been appointed -and introduced the community this past Monday- to do upgrades from gravel to tar on the 13km road for the contract amount of R73.9million.

Before the Christmas recess, M Civils/Dimokotso JV appointed to do the 13km Phase 2 upgrade from gravel to tar of the D417 road from Lobatleng to Motswedi outside Lehurutshe.

*Meanwhile, today (Thurs) and tomorrow (Fri) the department is scheduled to do more sod turnings and introducing contractors in at least two other awarded road projects in Bojanala District and elsewhere in the coming week.
