Government to integrate planning systems for better service delivery…

Date: Tuesday, August 31, 2010

On 31 August 2010, the Deputy Minister of Transport, Jeremy Cronin met with MEC Mahlakeng Mahlakeng in Rustenburg. The Deputy Minister emphasised the importance of all levels of government getting the most out of service delivery. He mentioned this in relation to the plans of introducing the Bus Rapid Transport (BRT) to Rustenburg.

The BRT system, which is envisaged to transport approximately 265 000 people per day in Rustenburg is still in its early planning stages. This system will form part of a transport network which will improve commuter transport services in the area and the North West as a whole once it comes into operation in 2015/16.

“To ascertain that we succeed in bringing this service, the Local Municipality, which must lead the process, the provincial Department of Public Works, Roads and Transport and my department must give emphasis to a dedicated team that will realistically plan, budget and implement the system,” said the Deputy Minister.

Deputy Minister Cronin pointed out that the National Department is keen to ensure success of the Rustenburg BRT system as the area is viable due to the short distances that will be done on a daily basis.

Chief Directorate Transportation together with transport planning unit of the Municipality are to further engage in the coming week on plans for ensuring success of the project. This team will provide feedback to MEC Mahlakeng to further engage the Deputy Minister.
