The Mmabatho Convention Centre is expected to undergo a major restructuring that would result in its expansion from its current capacity of 3,000 persons to have an additional 9,000 single plenary session capacity.
This will transform the current facility into an International Level Convention Center with similar capabilities to those of Inkosi Albert Luthuli Convention Center in Durban and the Cape Town International Convention Center. This envisaged project will put Mahikeng and the Province on the map of destinations for International events The project also throws into the mix the design and construction of a Five Star Hotel in the same precinct but more about that later. The main facilities to be provided include in the envisaged Internal Convention Centre include:: auditoriums; flexible conference rooms; meeting rooms; informal discussion spaces; main kitchen and eight kitchenettes, offices restaurants; a business center and parking. The envisaged five-star hotel facility (GAABOMOTO INTERNATIONAL HOTEL) will have 400 rooms. A kitchen; dining room; bar / lobby areas; gymnasium; offices; board rooms; swimming pools; business center; saloon / amenity shop; health spar; parking and a helipad. Job creation in the is expected to be the first and immediate impact on the community if the project goes ahead as envisaged in terms of short and long term direct employment opportunities created during the construction period and beyond. During construction it is estimated that on average of 1,109 direct jobs will be created while an additional 1,153 jobs would be created as indirect jobs totaling 2,262 jobs during the construction stage. Upon completion an estimated 320 permanent jobs would be created by the hotel alone. The employment potential for the Convention Center will over 3,334 jobs created directly and indirectly in the service to the facility. This would continue to benefit the community for decades and would positively impact on the life of many a person who would in turn impact positively the lives of the community they reside in and the province as a whole.
