CLASSIC examples of the “real’’ Public Works
at work is there for all to see at four of our projects. Little
is said or known about these. They are in the deepest rural
areas of the province, where few bother to frequent and witness
the least acknowledged, yet one of our perfected initiative
in taking Bokone Bophirima forward.
Just over a 100 kilometres from the provincial capital Mahikeng, at villages of Makgori and Masamane, internal staff of the department of Public Works and Roads are constructing three building infrastructure projects. The fourth is in Moshana village, Zeerust, which is also a flagship project under construction by our internal team based at Lehurutshe sub-districts. The projects in question are: two Early Learning Centres (Makgori and Masamane) and Road Camp facilities in Makgori and Moshana). The combined value of the four is estimated at more than R20m, had the department opted to go on open tender for construction of same. No! There is no contractor on site, yet the instant sight at the three projects visited- this was an unannounced visit- resembled a bee-hive activity. The buzz of the drones and the workers was more than audible, and one got a sense, these workers indeed have pride and a sense of ownership of what they have been tasked to do. Guess what? The move also made business sense. Approximately R8m is all we had to part with in order to complete the said projects. There is remarkable progress, and more could have registered, if the supply of water was not serious a challenge as it is now in the villages mentioned above. Sourced from our own internal staff (Ngaka Modiri Molema District), teams of bricklayers; plumbers; painters; electricians all beefed-up by at least 10 Expanded Public Works (EPWP) beneficiaries at each of the above mentioned projects are putting shoulder to the wheel. But where have they been and doing all these years? Do we have such internal staff in other districts of Dr Kenneth Kaunda, Bojanala and Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati? Yes! Maybe even more. In days gone by, Public Works built and renovated schools, government offices, constructed and maintained roads using internal staff rather than outsourcing the work we have capacity to do. Could the perfect examples at Masamane, Makgori and Moshana be an inspiration to tackle head-on some of the projects with what we have, before we look elsewhere. Go! and see for yourselves. It does not always have to be ``out on open tender’’ for the machinery to work!. END
