Consensus reached on the R350m revamp of two strategic road projects...

Date: Tuesday, January 19, 201

A memorandum of agreement which includes the Department of Public Works and Roads as a major stakeholder has been signed, paving the way for construction works to begin on two strategic road projects with a combined estimated value of R350 million.

One of the roads earmarked for rehabilitation (R295 million) is a cross border road infrastructure project which links the provinces of Limpopo to Bokone Bophirima.

For the portion of the road project that falls within the borders of Bokone Bophirima in the area, which is the competency of the Department of Public Works and Roads, the estimated costs of the road rehabilitation and contribution from the department would be R55 million.

Included in the partnership is the Road Agency of Limpopo (RAL) and one of the country's leading cement companies , PPC.

They will contribute more than R58.8million towards the upgrading of the road from Dwaalboom to Northam.

The roads meant for upgrading from gravel to surface (tar) will be on road (D2702) between PPC's Dwaalboom cement factory and the boundary with Bokone Bophirima which is an 11 kilometre stretch.

Included are:

• Road D869 between the boundary of Bokone Bophirima and the already 10,38km stretch surfaced section of Road 869.

• Road D1234 between the intersection with Road D1235 and the intersection with Road P20/2. The total length on this project is 21.74km.

• Road P20/2 between the intersection with Road D1234 and the intersection with Road P110/1 at Koedoespoort (7.5km) all within the boundaries of Limpopo Province.

``Project Two'', will be the upgrading from gravel to surface of Road D2702 from the boundary with the province of Limpopo to the intersection with road number D1309.

From that intersection (D1309) to the beginning of the 5.4km stretch block paving at Mokgalwaneng Village. Construction will also include a pedestrian bridge over the above mentioned road in the vicinity of the school between villages of Mokgalwaneng and Modimong to the boundary with Limpopo.

Should a need arise for additional funding to complete the two projects, the appointed consulting engineer is expected to submit a detailed motivation to the Department of Public Works and Roads, PPC and Roads Agency of Limpopo providing full explanation as to why such additional funding is required for the completion of the roads.

RAL as the implementing agent would institute a tender submission process and through such a process appoint the contractor or contractors who meet the selection criteria set by the agency.
