The Adopt a Cop programme is an attempt to establish and build a relationship of trust between scholars/learners/children and the South African Police Service. Its focus is on instilling an awareness of crime among our schools and communities, thus educating them of preventative ways through education and promoting social cohesion by supporting the youth in dealing with crime, breaking cycles violence and promoting individual responsibilities.
In this way participative policing is promoted and will be to the benefit of the school community and society at large as well as to the South African Police Service.
FUNCTIONS OF THE PROGRAMME
A local Police Official is allocated to a school. This official is screened before by the station commissioner and members before recruitment determine whether he/she has the necessary skills and abilities and is then trained and informed accordingly.
The site manager and educators are consulted about all the actions and activities. The official regularly visits the school and is available to them to help them solve some of the problems which are related to his responsibilities and arranges specific expert presentations by specialists and also helps in launching of projects. The Police Official renders a voluntary service.
