Provincial Language Services

VISION:

To develop previously marginalised indigenous languages used in the province, and to promote respect and tolerance for our linguistic diversity.

      

MISSION:

To provide an effective, efficient and capacitated language services to our customers.

1. LEGISLATIVE MANDATE:

The purpose of the Provincial Language Services is to give effect to:

• Section 6 and 9 of the constitution of the Republic of South Africa (Act 108 of 1996);
• The PAN South African Language Board Act (Act59 of 1995);
• The National Language Policy Framework 2003; and
• The Batho Pele principles.

2. STRATEGIC OBJECTIVES OF THE UNIT:

1.1. To facilitate equitable access to government services, knowledge and iformation.
1.2. To ensure redress for the previously marginalized official indigenous languages.
1.3. To elevate the status and advance the use of sign language in the province.
1.4. To change mind-sets regarding the use of indigenous languages.
1.5. To encourage the learning of other official indigenous languages to promote national unity, linguistic and cultural diversity.
1.6. To determine the language use and preferences of our local communities.

3. SERVICES RENDERED BY THE PROVINCIAL LANGUAGE SERVICES:

3.1. TERMINOLOGY DEVELOPMENT:

The development of terminology forms an integral part of language development. This is done in the form of:

• Quality Assurance of transltion and editing services to departments in the three main official languages in the Province i.e. (Stswana, English and Afrikaans).
• Identification of various fields where there is a lack of terminology in the equivalent language;
• Collection of terms;
• Terminology Coordination
• Compilation of Provincial Database.

3.2. LANGUAGE POLICY AND PLANNING

• Liaise with and advise various government departments, municipal authorities and public entities on the equitable use of official languages in the Province.
• Liaise with and advise other language stakeholders on matters of common interest pertaining to languages.
• Conduct advocacy campaigns on the promotion of multilingualism
