Current Positions


Mr Supra Mahumapelo is the Premier of Bokone Bophirima Province since 21 May 2014. He is currently the ANC Provincial Chairperson in Bokone Bophirima since February 2011.


Supra Obakeng Ramoeletsi Mahumapelo was born on the 7th June 1968 in a tiny village of Manamolela in the former Western Transvaal next to a small town of Delareyville which is now part of the Bokone Bophirima Province. His late mother, Agnes Matlakala Bereng was a domestic worker in the city of Klerksdorp currently known as Matlosana. She later worked as a domestic worker in Heldekruin Roodepoort and forced by her son in 1995 to leave domestic work. His late father, Stephen Kalagongwe Mahumapelo was an entrepreneur in the village of Moruleng near Rustenburg. He grew up as a herd boy in the Manamolela village.


Academic Qualifications


Supra started his schooling at Marotse Primary School, located approximately 5km from Manamolela Village where he was born and grew up. He, like other children in the village, had to walk on bare foot to school. He later attended at Tlotlego Middle School in the now Atamelang Township which is about 3km from the Manamolela Village. His High School years were in both Phatshima High School in Atamelang and Kgamanyane High School in Moruleng where he matriculated in 1988.


Post Matric Education


Supra acquired a National Diploma in Commercial Practice (NDCom) at the former Technikon Northern Transvaal (TNT) now TUT in Soshanguve in the now province of Gauteng.


He also did a Certificate in Public Finance and Economics with the University of South Africa (Unisa).


He did his Masters Degree in Political Economy with the former University of Port Elizabeth (UPE) now the Nelson Mandela Metro University.


Positions last held/Career/Memberships/Other Activities


Mr Supra Mahumapelo was recruited into politics by a fellow student Esiah Mali who came from Bothaville in the Province of the Free State in 1983. He translated the Freedom Charter into Setswana using an old type writer.


He served in various positions in the Branch Executive Committee of South African National Students Congress (SANSCO) now Sasco while studying at TNT. He was expelled with other student’s activists in 1990 for political activities and was arrested on several occasions with other student activists by the Pretoria police but this did not deter him.


Supra was appointed as an ANC Provincial Deputy Elections Co-ordinator in 1994 in Klerksdorp. Moved over to Mafikeng in 1995 and later got elected as the Mmabatho ANC Branch Chairperson. In 1998 he was elected as the Provincial Chairperson of the ANCYL in Bokone Bophirima.  In 2002 he was elected as an additional member of the ANC PEC in Bokone Bophirima.  The ANC employed him as the Provincial Political Education Secretary from 1995 to 2004.


In April 2004,he was elected as part of the ANC collective in the Bokone Bophirima Provincial Legislature and became the Chairperson for the Portfolio Committee on Finance and Economic Development, Members of the Public Accounts Committee, ANC Chief Whip. He left the position voluntarily when he got elected as the ANC Provincial Secretary in 2005. In 2005 he was elected as the ANC Provincial Secretary and again in 2008. The collective of the ANC PEC was dissolved by the NEC in 2009. When the Provincial Conference was reconvened in February 2011 he got elected as the ANC Provincial Chairperson to date.


In February 2012, he was deployed by the ANC as a member of the Bokone Bophirima Provincial Legislature. Immediately became Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Finance and Provincial Affairs. In April 2012, he was deployed by the ANC as the Bokone Bophirima Provincial Legislature Speaker.
