MEC Motlhabane restores trust deficit between Gov and Molelema community after recent service delivery unrests

A number of service delivery protests and unrests across the North West Province have not only caused instabilities but also created a trust deficit between government and the communities. This is as a result of lack of service delivery which is particularly meant to improve the lives of the people of Bokone Bophirima.

The situation recently spiralled out of control in the villages of Matsheng, Morokweng, Kokomeng and Khudutlou, with more devastating effect experienced in the Molelema village in the Greater Taung Municipality.

The protests continued for more than two months. The area was unsafe, posing danger to communities within the villages as well as making it difficult for government officials to access the area to deliver the much needed services like health and social services. All roads were closed, blockaded with stones and other heavy objects.

The North West Premier, Professor Job Mokgoro deployed MEC for Community Safety and Transport Management, Dr Mpho Motlhabane to the place after a community meeting was agreed to. Following this, Motlhabane was committed to rollout a program that would be a catalyst to government intervention in the area.

Recently, MEC Motlhabane led a team of government officials from different Departments, the South African Police Services and throngs of volunteers from the community, on a de-bushing campaign.

The program was deliberately geared towards rebuilding relations between government and the communities. MEC Motlhabane said that it was important for his Department to lead a campaign on rebuilding relations and restoring trust between people and government.

“After all that has transpired here, people no longer feel safe, including government officials, therefore, as the Department responsible for safety, we had to start by ensuring that our people 'are and feel safe’.

"With so many of the people who joined this campaign, we are confident that this is a sign that indeed tensions have calmed down and the community is ready to work again with our government."

"This is our first step in our attempt, as government, to make things right and we are happy that things are looking good, normality is evidently back and stability is restored. This certainly, serves as a sign that the communities are willing to receive government services once again".

“From here, I will report back to Premier that the people of Molelema and the surrounding villages have calmed down and are ready to reconcile and renew their hope on their government” said Motlhabane.

As part of the day's activities during the campaign, an de-bushing was conducted on open spaces and grading of the three sports field in the village.

These were done with an objective to encourage young people to participate in sports rather than remaining idling and vulnerable to engage in criminal activities, drugs and alcohol abuse.

Apart from about 200 volunteers who participated on the campaign, hundreds of community members had also gathered outside the torched Molelema Community Hall, where they received government services such as registering for social grants, doing affidavits from police and other community members continued getting assistance from other Departments.
