SPATE OF ACCIDENTS VEXING”, SAID CONCERNED MEC LEHARI AS ROAD CRASHES CLAIMED 11 LIVES

Eleven people have died in two separate horrific accidents in the last two weeks, and this is a serious concern. This is according to the MEC for the Department of Community and Transport Management, Sello Lehari. The latest accident earlier this week claimed four lives to date.

The Department was informed that the driver of the minibus transporting a football team lost control in a stormy weather and overturned on N18 outside Mafikeng. Two people aged 47 and 33 died at the scene whilst the other two died at the hospital. In total, 13 passengers were taken to hospital with varying degree of injuries.

Last week three women were burnt beyond recognition when two vehicles collided head-on along the Ganyesa and Vryburg Road in the Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District. The vehicles were reported to have burst into flames after the collision, making it difficult to rescue passengers trapped. Three other passengers died later on arrival at the Vryburg hospital. A twenty nine (29) old woman who survived with her three months old baby girl were rushed to the hospital but sadly the baby passed on. MEC Lehari passed condolences to the bereaved families.

“We would like to pass our deepest condolences to the families of all the deceased and wish them strength during this difficult time. It is difficult to accept the passing of a loved one. It is even more so when the passing is as tragic as this one”, said MEC Lehari also wishing those hospitalised speedy recovery.

MEC Lehari once more appealed to road users to be extra careful on the roads on festive period while traveling at night.

“We want to ensure that we keep accident statistics as low as possible and we can do so only when road users comply. The ensure compliance all our law enforcement officers will be out in full force in all arterial and local routes”, said MEC Lehari at the time.
Investigation on the cause of both accidents is underway.
