NW MEC Motlhabane expressed his heartfelt condolences to the family of 7 deceased

North West Community Safety and Transport Management MEC Mpho Motlhabane says the loss of 7 people who died on the R503 road between Mahikeng and Lichtenburg on Sunday was an unfortunate incident which came at the time the traffic flow has decreased.

Giving his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families when he visited those admitted at the General Delarey hospital Lichtenburg, Motlhabane said the law enforcement officers have worked hard during the festive season to protect the lives of people particularly on these main roads, however, incidents such like this took place at an unexpected time.

"Our heartfelt condolences to the families of the bereaved and we also wish a speedy recovery to those injured and admitted here in the hospital. We hope that you will gain strength and overcome this unfortunate tragedy.

Its unbelievable that when we thought we have survived the rough season of terrible accident we now get to experience this tragedy, this is painful and unbelievable," said Motlhabane.

According to the information received, it is reported that the driver of a Toyota Quantum lost control after hitting a honey badger about 10km to Lichtenburg. The Quantum was returning to Klerksdorp from Mahikeng ferrying family members who attended a family gathering in Mahikeng.

Seven female passengers including an 11- year-old girl were certified dead at the scene by paramedics. The ages of the deceased ranges from eleven to fifty years. Meanwhile, the remaining seven including a 6-year-old boy were rushed to General Delarey Hospital where four were treated for shock and minor injuries.

Traffic is anticipated to pick on main roads of the Province as most of the people are expected to drive back to work including official opening of schools for the year 2018. MEC Motlhabane humbly request road users to be vigilant and abide with all road laws to avoid unnecessary incidents which mostly leaves our roads painted red with the blood of innocent people.

"The road is a space to share, therefore we need to exercise patience and cooperate with each other for all of us to reach our destinations safely. Let us all take responsibility of road safety to safe our lives and reduce the high rate of accidents and fatalities," appealed Motlhabane.
